4.5/5

Il CD in questione, dall'accattivante titolo sinestesico The Ear Is the Shadow of the Eye, fa pensare che gia durante la registrazione i due protagonisti fossero profondamente consapevoli di quanto andavano sviluppando.

WWW.CITIZENJAZZ.COM 17 mai 2020; TOMAŽ GROM / ZLATKO KAUČIČ - THE EAR IS THE SHADOW OF THE EYE

The Ear Is The Shadow Of The Eye est le résultat de ces rencontres.

WWW.VITALWEEKLY.NET ZLATKO KAUCIC & TOMAZ GROM - THE EAR IS THE SHADOW OF THE EYE (CD by Sploh)

Kaučič born in Slovenia lived and worked in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Holland before returning to Slovenia in 1992, enriched with performing experience with many different musicians. Grom is an important exponent of the Slovenian scene. Not only as a musician but also as an organizer of festivals and founder of Zavod Sploh, an organization for the production of music. Slovenia has a lively scene of improvised music (Fresh Dust Trio, Kaja Draksler, Irena Tomazin, etc.), and also this duo recording is a convincing example of this. Both played together first in 2010 on a festival. They followed different paths afterwards, until last year when they did recordings during February - March in the home-kitchen of Zlatko. Here Grom (double bass, freeze, voice) and Kaučič (percussion, objects, amplified zither), recorded 12 improvisations that illustrate they were more than ready for a duo-statement. Kaučič uses many different objects, which should not be a problem in a kitchen. Grom uses several extended techniques. This makes that their improvisations are very colourful and diverse concerning timbre, volume, dynamics, patterns, etc. Their dialogues are very physical and down to earth, which makes their music has a soul and each improvisation has its taste. A very lively meeting of two experienced and inventive musicians.

WWW.SPLOH.SI 05/01/2020; DOMAČA IMPROVIZIRANA GLASBA V LETU 2019 – PREGLED SKOZI DISKOGRAFIJO

Zlatko Kaučič in Tomaž Grom: Uho je senca očesa (Zavod Sploh) Dve osrednji osebi domače improvizacijske scene, Zlatko Kaučič in Tomaž Grom, sta v zadnjem letu izdala več plošč.

WWW.FREEJAZZBLOG.ORG March 17, 2020; Zlatko Kaučič/Tomaž Grom – ?he Ear is in the Shadow of the Eye (Sploh, 2019) *****

The duo was, and remains, a favorite of mine as a listener. It surpasses the limitations of the solo recording or playing, while it engulfs collective thinking and acting. It is a minimal approach to sound making but at the same time two people can produce a lot of noise and equal amounts of pathos.

The duo of Kaucic on percussion, several objects and zither and Grom on double bass and voice is another low key release from Slovenia’s Sploh label. Could be their best, I’m not sure about this, but I can tell you it’s the first five star recording I’ve listened for 2020. Having recorded all the tracks in Kaucic’s home kitchen, the sounds they produce have an immediate and very warm effect on the listener. Like two close friends that chat, laugh and discuss upon the everyday trivialities while cooking, this is an improvisational on the spot recording in the way the great late John Stevens described it for the recording of SME’s Face To Face with Trevor Watts. Two people getting together, sitting close to each and getting into a non-hierarchical musical dialogue.

Even though this cd is a home kitchen recording, by no means it is a low volume or reductionist affair. Both the double bass and the drums can be high volume instruments and the two musicians know how t make them sound like that. The recording is separated into twelve smaller tracks like small vignettes or, maybe, like smaller chapters of a greater idea. Some of the titles seem really personal, others (in an act of not taking themselves really seriously) sound funny, but all of them seem in cohesion with the general linear approach of the recording. Sounds made on the spot, with each one of them being a step to lead to the other. A constant progress of ideas, thoughts, gestures that never saturate the listener but, quite the contrary, make you ask for more.

The homemade acoustics of the recording environment seem to work in favor of the recording and add to the aforementioned warmth of it. The duo has played together in a variety of situations and that shows on the interplay and mutual understanding of the two. Many highs and lows in terms of volume, while there is a polyrhythmic barrage of sounds coming from both instruments. Even though it’s hard to imagine that from two people improvising in a home kitchen, the recording has the feeling of the urgency of now. There’s a vinyl version as well, so beware.

Fantastic new release from Tomaž Grom (bass) and Zlatko Kaučič (percussion), 'The Ear Is the Shadow of the Eye' on Zavod Sploh out of Slovenia. Improv, I take it, but twelve relatively short tracks, each a concise exploration of a given area, the sound-field concentrated in the lower ranges of the bass (rich and dark, even quasi-thematic at times) and the percussion, including resonant metals. Highly enjoyable, check it out. (plus excellent liner notes from our own Luka T. Zagoričnik

WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/MACIEJ.LEWENSTEIN February, March 2019; **** Zlatko Kaučič & Tomaz Grom: The Ear Is The Shadow Of The Eye

Recorded in Zlatko's kitchen, "Uho je senca oLesa", is a masterpiece by the two veterans of the Slovenian avant-garde and probably the most abstract record of Zlatko. On "From hands to ears" Tomaž bows, and together with the monotone kettle and gongs drumming creates a dramatic and scary mood. "Learning lessons of memory" continues, but lightens the mood. "Thee ear is the shadow of the eye" is, in contrast, delicate, even lyrical, with quiet noises generated by Zlatko, voices, and whispers. "forgetting won't help" has a more "traditional" percussion and completely unexpected sounds generated by some objects, a freeze or the bass. Here especially, but on the whole album the concept of "fake music" and "fake sounds" is playing an important role. A 6-minute long "goldish" ad the following "cinema ear" are my favorites: the first one for its peaceful and tranquilizing mood, the second for the beautiful bass finger-picking. "two right hands" has a particularly attractive, yet dark atmosphere. "though ashtray (pepelnik), I still like to read your poems" has more structured rhythms and unidentified other sounds. "lucky claw" and "sound out" are notable for the great bowing of Tomao. The final "battling for a title" is a piece full of peaceful bass bowing and delicate percussion work. Complex and difficult to understand music, but without any doubt worth the engagement of the listener.

The Ear Is The Shadow Of The Eye

Tomaž Grom - double bass, freeze, voice*
Zlatko Kaučič - percussion, objects, amplified zither
op het label (Sploh - Ljubljana, Slovenia december 2019)

This CD is a fascinating experimental, electro-acoustic, free jazz CD that will definitely keep up with me for the rest of the early 2020 The design of the CD case did not bring me any information that people get much further with in terms of interpretation but the linernotes by Luka T. Zagoričnik give insight into present and past of Kaucic and Grom. They played as a duo at the Mariborng Festival in 2010 and after nine years in which each went their own way they came together to bring the achievements of their individual courses and everyone's progression as creative artist on this CD. Individual and as a duo. Rhythmic, pulsating, in dialogue and monologue, interactive and with amazing sound improvisations. All of that makes this CD a listening experience of jewelste and forces the listener to inevitable focus on what comes to him or her. The fact that free jazz in Slovenia deserves all the attention, Tomaž Grom and Zlatko Kaučič have proven with this CD.
